Executive summary

A group of researchers from Japan reported a rare case of oligorecurrent esophageal cancer in complete remission for 5 years after a course of definitive proton therapy. This patient received esophagectomy and chemotherapy, however liver metastasis and lymph node metastases were detected a few months later. The patient opted for proton therapy with which a total dose of 79.2GyRBE was delivered to the liver lesion and 60GyRBE to the lymph node lesions. No acute or late complication of more than grade 2 occurred. The patient remains in complete remission 5 years after treatment without surgery or chemotherapy.
