Executive summary

Experimental results (in water) indicating that oxygen consumption during irradiation with x-rays, protons and carbon ions at varying doses (up to 340 Gy/sec) depended on the dose of the irradiation rather than its concetration. Thus, this manuscripts provides further support to the manuscript by Labarbe at.al., who discussed the theoretical model of oxygen depletion (developed by Curie and IBA to explain the FLASH effect), and verifies that oxygen depletion might not account (at least not on its own) for the protective effects of FLASH on healthy tissue.
